Recently I was at Downtown Camera looking for a new digital SLR to replace my Canon XTi. I got to chat with the the staff- and they were recommending the Canon Mark III or Nikon D3. We all agreed that Sony’s Alpha had been interesting with built in image stabilization and sensor cleaning; but the optics, sensors and image processor had been just average. Finally, the consesus was that Sony Alpha would have one last chance to make a dent in the digital SLR market – and if the Sony Alpha 700 was any sign….. well good luck.
Well if the announcement at the PMA show in Las Vegas is any indicator, Sony will have a 24.5 MPixel, full 35MM sensor (so all your lens will be back to familiar operating range – no 1.x multiplier to take into account). Sony insists that this camera will be available this year and will be a “pro consumer camera”. Which is to say – no pricing was announced. So this is the Sony shot across the bow of Nikon and Canon. The camera certainly looks like a very good “one last chance”.But look here and here for more details.
