Lensbaby

I saw one of these Lensbabies in down at THEx (Canadian National Exhibition in Toronto, Ontario) and I nearly disgraced myself laughing out loud (murfle.. muffle.. lol). It looks like a dinky-toy not a lens.

I chuckled for the rest of the day.

However, I got my come-uppance at the Junction Gallery Festival along Dundas Street this past weekend when I asked a photographer how she got such nifty in and out of focus floral shots. They were especially attractive for the sharpness of focus slowly trailing off at either the bottom left or top right margins. Very nice indeed. Must be a new Photoshop filter.

“Nope, this is from my new Lensbaby.” My “what is a lenzbabee” soon had me ruing my rude merriment down at THEx. Here was another behind the camera innovation that proves that Adobe plugins and software is not the only place for creative camera work. And I really should know better. From pinhole and pattern masks to vaseline on the outside of a 80A filter – photographers have been doing “hardware effects and filters” for an awfully long time. Lensbaby is just another in a long line of camera-based special effects.
